Program of Work 2010-2011

New Century for FCS: New Challenges, New Solutions

This year brings an opportunity for WAFCS to share and learn about research and strategies on many critical issues
facing individuals, families, and communities in the second century of FCS. What financial planning advice can be given to families facing foreclosure and credit card debt? How do generational differences affect the workplace? What policies should be developed to protect individuals’ medical information and reduce health care costs?.

Goal I: Vision The Washington Association of Family & Consumer Sciences is the oldest and broadest force in bringing people together to
improve the lives of individuals, families, and communities.
• Actively promote membership in our organization to professionals who work with families or in other areas related to Family and Consumer Sciences.
• Recognize individuals and programs that demonstrate and contribute to the betterment of the ideals of Family and Consumer Sciences.
• Implement programming that addresses public issues and prevents, reduces or eliminates personal and societal problems.

Goal II: Mission The Washington Association of Family & Consumer Sciences will provide leadership and support for professionals whose work assists individuals, families, and communities in making informed decisions about their well being, relationships, and resources to achieve optimal quality of life.
• Work with community resources to devise methods for improving family life.
• Network with student members to develop skills for their future.

Goal III: Core Values The Washington Association of Family & Consumer Sciences will promote the following values:
• We believe the family is a fundamental unity of society.
• We are dedicated to life-long learning and diverse scholarships.
• We will help new professionals.
• We will exemplify integrity and ethical behavior.
• We will seek new ideas and be open to change.

Ensuring the Future ~ Invest in Student Members

AAFCS is encouraging all affiliates to include student members in their activities, support the university programs, and assist them in their activities by becoming mentors and investing in them financially. The WAFCS & WA-FACSE Executive Boards are already taking steps to involve students at the state level. Plans are underway to include them in the state conference in October. However, to get involved at the national level, the students need help. Current FCS Student Association members would like to attend the AAFCS conference in Cleveland. Some of the university associations have held fundraisers, but still need help with funding to get there.

Would you be willing to help by making a donation to assist a student member get to Cleveland?  If so, contact Donna Graham via email at wafcspid@msn.comor call her at (509) 922-7563 for more details.

In a rapidly changing world, one of the gifts we can give youth is the ability to become learners who expand their critical thinking skills and are prepared to live in a world that respects diversity of goals, opinions, and beliefs. FCS educators are preparing today’s youth for tomorrow’s world.
