AAFCS Certification and Professional Development

Professional development within the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences encompasses: the Certification Program; the Accreditation Program; and numerous opportunities to assume leadership roles, publish in the Association's professional journals, and enhance personal knowledge and skills through participation in meetings, seminars, and workshops at district, state, and national levels.

Certification is based on individual mastery of knowledge common and essential to all family and consumer sciences professionals as verified by a minimum of a baccalaureate degree and successful completion of the National Family and Consumer Sciences Examination. The AAFCS Certification Program is designed to:

  • Assure the public that credentialed family and consumer sciences professionals have attained a threshold level of knowledge that enables them to perform services as defined by the mission of the profession;
  • Foster excellence in the family and consumer sciences profession and develop criteria for assessing such excellence; and
Promote professional growth of individuals certified in family and consumer sciences by encouraging a systematic program of professional development and continuing education.

Washington Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Educators

The mission of family and consumer sciences education is to prepare students for family life, work life, and careers in family and consumer sciences by providing opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors needed for:

•  Balancing personal, home, family and work lives.

•  Promoting optimal nutrition and wellness across the life span.
•  Successful life management, employment, and career development.
•  Functioning effectively as providers and consumers of goods and services.
•  Managing resources to meet the material needs of individuals and families.
•  Strengthening the well-being of individuals and families across the life span.
•  Becoming responsible citizens and leaders in family, community, and work settings.
•  Appreciating human worth and accepting responsibility for one's actions and success in family and work life.

•  Using critical and creative thinking skills to address problems in diverse family, community, and work     

    environments.

Family and Consumer Sciences Education Association

The Family and Consumer Sciences Education Association (FCSEA) is a voluntary organization of family and consumer sciences educators and others associated with or interested in family and consumer sciences instruction in schools and colleges. Family and consumer sciences educators are dedicated to helping each individual help him or herself through a better understanding and control of family and community life. They work to improve the quality of family and consumer sciences instruction and to broaden the scope of the curriculum.

Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy

WAFCS is proud to be a supporter of Jump$tart Washington, a coalition of key stakeholders advocating and promoting financial literacy. The Coalition's direct objective is to encourage curriculum enrichment to insure that basic personal financial management skills are attained during the K-12 educational experience. The wheels of education do not need to be reinvented, they simply require balance.

The Consumer Jungle

Consumer Jungle is a web-based program that helps turn high school students into savvy consumers without putting them to sleep. There's something for everyone. Students will discover a host of on-line games, and teachers will find free classroom materials. There's even something for parents - a section filled with tips on how to help the young adults in their lives find their way safely through the real world. New to Consumer Jungle is our Consumer Awareness section which is filled with general tips and resources for consumers.

Washington State Dairy Council

The Washington State Dairy Council supports nutrition education for all.  They have new materials now available to introduce the new U.S. dietary intake guidelines, now called "My Pyramid."  Their web site is located at http://www.eatsmart.org
